M.E. History

I was diagnosed as having M.E. in November 1998 after spending a month in hospital.

The onset of my M.E. was very sudden following a few months of having suffered sore throats and nose bleeds and feeling the need to rest a bit more than normal. I thought I was just getting to old at 47 for all the physical work I was doing as a self-employed gardener.

I suffered  from M.E.for five years, feeling exhausted and having a multitude of symptoms, pains etc.

By October 2003 I had made a complete recovery thanks to Complementary Medicine and the good support of my family and District nurse.

The first year of my illness I spent in bed. I was able to get out for about 5 mins. in an hour which allowed me to walk to the loo and back, sometimes I could manage a wash when I was there but I wasn't strong enough to wash and clean my teeth on the same visit. Sometimes I was just to weak to get back and used to fall and suffer temporary paralysis for up to 2 hours before I was able to get back to bed. The second year I usually managed 15 mins. out of every hour out of bed and managed to walk to the garden and sit in a reclining chair to enjoy the fresh air.

I progressed from a reclining wheelchair to ordinary wheelchair by the end of the second year but could only sit in it for about half an hour before my head would start to flop and I would be exhausted. I gradually progressed having lots of good and bad spells over the next year but gradually that evened out as I managed to pace myself. As my condition improved I managed short horse rides if I was helped on and off. The horse was my legs and I was able to see things I hadn't seen for years.

During the five years I suffered I completely changed my diet, my various symptoms were treated by variety of complementary therapists. I did a lot of personal awareness work on myself to clear out all the old emotional problems I'd been carrying for years and the new ones I had from being so ill for so long. I also had my amalgam fillings out which cleared my brain fog and gave me back my memory and concentration levels. It took a lot of determination but I always knew I would get better although others didn't always expect it.

In the fifth year I started to train in Reiki, Em-Power Therapy and Bach Flower Remedies all of which I regularly treated myself with.

I am now healthier and more self-confident than I've ever been. I progressed to being able to walk in the Black Mountains all day,  riding a horse and managed two part-time jobs. I usually go for a quick walk or jog in the forest before breakfast.

In 2006 I walked 230 miles across Wales for charity, and I have backpacked each year since.
